Groundbreaking ceremony for 925 m long new Main crossing of the A7 freeway | Planning and execution with BIM | Construction under ongoing traffic until 2033 | Relief for important north-south traffic axis

Glattpark (Opfikon), April 28, 2026 - Today's ground-breaking ceremony marks the official start of the demolition and replacement of the Marktbreit Main Bridge on the A7 highway. Implenia is carrying out the project on behalf of the federal government's Autobahn GmbH as technical leader in a joint venture with Plauen Stahl Technologie; both partners each hold a share of around 50%. The new replacement construction takes account of the increasing volume of traffic on the A7 - especially freight and heavy goods traffic - and thus strengthens one of Germany's most important north-south transport axes.

The ground-breaking ceremony was attended by representatives of the client and politicians, including Ulrich Lange, Member of the Bundestag and Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister of Transport.

"With the replacement of the Mainbrücke Marktbreit bridge, we are making an important contribution to the efficiency of the A7 highway. We are pleased to contribute our many years of experience and extensive expertise in bridge construction to the successful realization of this challenging project," said Henning Schrewe, Head ICS Germany at Implenia, on site.

The new Main Bridge is being built as a steel composite box girder using the incremental launching method. It has a total length of around 925 m and a width of 31 m. Building Information Modeling (BIM) was already used for the design and tender planning; this method will also be used for the execution planning. After completion, the consortium will hand over a complete "digital twin" of the bridge to the client.

The construction work is being carried out while traffic is still running in order to keep restrictions for road users to a minimum. This places high demands on the construction logistics. The first preparatory work was carried out in the fall of 2025; completion is scheduled for 2034. Implenia is applying its proven expertise in bridge construction and in the digital planning and implementation of complex construction projects to this infrastructure project.
