Groundbreaking Ceremony for New Freiburg Freight Bypass | A Major Contribution to the European North-South Freight Corridor | Implenia to Build Two Bridges

Glattpark (Opfikon), May 29, 2026 – Today’s groundbreaking ceremony in Teningen marks the start of work on a key section of the Karlsruhe–Basel rail project in the Freiburg im Breisgau area. The project is part of the European freight corridor Rotterdam–Cologne–Basel–Milan–Genoa. In the 11-kilometer-long planning approval section 8.1 between Riegel and March, Implenia is constructing a railway overpass and a road overpass across the Feuerbach River on behalf of DB InfraGO AG.

The new double-track freight line for the Freiburg bypass runs parallel to the A5 highway and is designed for speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour. The land-efficient design along an existing transportation corridor significantly reduces additional impacts on nature and the landscape. Once the route is completed, freight traffic will be able to bypass the Freiburg Bay; at the same time, Freiburg and the surrounding area will be relieved of approximately 50,000 freight trains annually, and the conditions for more stable local and long-distance traffic will be improved.

“With these two bridge structures, we are contributing to the implementation of one of Europe’s most significant rail infrastructure projects. We are pleased to bring our extensive experience in engineering and bridge construction to this project,” says Henning Schrewe, Head of ICS Germany at Implenia.
