Getingmidjan is an important part of Sweden's rail network and is one of the busiest routes in the country, with an average of one train every three minutes. The existing facility was built in the 1950s and is not adapted for today's traffic. The renovation is necessary to meet today's and tomorrow's demands for reliable and sustainable travel and transport.
Implenia Sverige AB was awarded the project in April 2017 for a contract value of SEK 885 million. The contract includes the rehabilitation of a 2 km long railway section and the replacement and repair of heavy structures such as bridges and tunnels. Five railway bridges and two footbridges, as well as both the 120-metre Riddarholm Tunnel and the 600-metre Södertunnel, will be refurbished to meet the requirements. The project is located in the heart of Stockholm and passes through Riddarholmen, a place with many cultural heritage buildings that are both sensitive and valuable - the cultural environment is therefore an important aspect. It is a very complex infrastructure project and Implenia is therefore solving the logistics mainly on water with pontoons, boats and other heavy marine equipment. In connection with preparatory works for the Getingmidjan, Implenia is already on site since 2016, the Little Getingmidjan. The contract is worth SEK 885 million and will start in summer 2017 and take about four years to complete.
