New motorway ring-road will improve traffic situation in the whole of north-west Germany | Implenia working in joint venture to build pre-stressed concrete road bridge, a cutting and motorway lanes | Large, complex infrastructure project | Contract worth more than EUR 100 million to Implenia

Glattpark (Opfikon), 14 March 2024 – On behalf of DEGES Deutsche Einheit Fernstrasse Planning- und -Bau GmbH, Implenia is completing the ring of motorways around the city of Bremen. Working in a joint venture with Johann Bunte Bauunternehmen, the Group is building section 2/2 of the A 281 motorway. The total order is worth more than EUR 130 million gross. Implenia’s share is over EUR 100 million gross. The project is in line with Implenia’s strategy of focusing on large, complex infrastructure projects. The new motorway link will significantly improve the traffic situation in the whole of north-west Germany.

Section 2/2 connects the existing section of the A 281 via the Arsten feeder to the A 1. The joint venture contract includes the construction of a 1.7 km section of the motorway bypass between the Neuenlander Ring and the Kattenturmer Heerstrasse near Bremen Airport. A 400 m elevated section will be carried by a prestressed concrete bridge. Support walls with bored pile foundations are being built first to take the motorway up to the bridge. The contract also includes a 290 m long cutting, the entrance area for a future tunnel under the Kattenturmer Heerstrasse, and an approximately 1 km long, four-lane motorway section between the southern end of the elevated road and the start of the cutting. The project is being managed using Lean Construction methods. Building work begins in May 2024 and should be completed in early 2029.

The new Bremen ring-road should significantly reduce noise and pollution problems and thus improve the quality of life in surrounding residential areas. “We are extremely pleased that DEGES has once again chosen us because of our integrated service offering for complex infrastructure projects,” says Henning Schrewe, Head Civil and Special Foundations Germany at Implenia. “Thanks to our experts in civil engineering and special foundations, we can deliver these services as an integrated unit and successfully execute this major project.”
