Implenia builds one of Sweden’s longest bridges

Order placed by municipality of Lidingö is worth around CHF 60 million | Construction of new concrete bridge | Demolition of existing steel bridge

Dietlikon, 9 November 2018 – The municipality of Lidingö near Stockholm has commissioned Implenia to build a new bridge over the Lilla Värtan strait and then demolish the old bridge. At 730 metres, the new “Lilla Lidingö” bridge will be one of the longest in Sweden. Built of concrete, it will carry pedestrians, cyclists and trams between Ropsten and Lidingö. The contract is worth around CHF 60 million.

Over the years, the old steel bridge, built in the early 20th century, has been repaired and reinforced many times. The municipality of Lidingö decided in 2012 that the most cost-effective solution would be to demolish the old bridge completely and build a new one. At 16 metres, this new bridge will be twice as wide as the old one, providing plenty of room for pedestrians, cyclists and mopeds in addition to a tram line. Low gradients of no more than two percent ensure that all the different users can use the bridge comfortably, while a special lighting concept ensures they stay safe in the dark. The aim is to triple pedestrian and bicycle traffic in comparison with the old bridge.

Work on “Lilla Lidingö” bridge will begin later this month and the new bridge will be open for use in December 2022. The old bridge will be demolished during the following year, with this work scheduled for completion in October 2023.
