ceremonial breakthrough safety tunnel Cholfirst

Implenia celebrated the breakthrough of the safety tunnel for the Cholfirst tunnel on the A4 freeway near Schaffhausen on Tuesday, 11 July 2023. Implenia has been commissioned by the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO) to build a new safety tunnel that will serve as an escape route for road users in the event of an incident. The construction of the escape tunnel is part of a comprehensive package of measures to improve road safety for this section of freeway.

Impressive key data for the safety tunnel since construction began in September 2020: around 45,000 man-hours, 4,800 grout anchors and 2,800m3 of shotcrete were required to excavate the approximately 22,000m3 of rock for the 1090m-long safety tunnel and the associated 6 connecting tunnels.

Guido Biaggio, Vice-Director of FEDRO and Head of the Infrastructure East Division, praised the good preparation and the fast driving performance at the breakthrough ceremony in front of around 100 project participants. Daniel Spörri, Head of Implenia Tunnel Construction Switzerland, thanked the miners for their professional and committed performance and the other project participants for their constructive cooperation.

After the end of the excavation work, the interior work will begin in the fall of 2023, followed by the installation of the operating and safety equipment from the summer of 2024. The safety tunnel is expected to be commissioned in 2025.
