Implenia’s apprentice masons build a wall for artists on the Sulzer site in Winterthur

Artists’ group celebrates 100th anniversary with major exhibition in Halle 1020

Dietlikon, 26 May 2016 – Implenia is building a new mixed-use, sustainable neighbourhood on the old Sulzer site in Winterthur. As well as homes and businesses, Zurich University of Applied Sciences will occupy various buildings around the site. In the meantime, Implenia is making Halle 1020 available to Künstlergruppe Winterthur (Winterthur Artists Group) so it can stage a major exhibition in celebration of its 100th anniversary. A “line wall” will run through the middle of the 70 metre long hall, energising the space and giving it structure. Art will be hung on both sides of the wall, which symbolises the backbone of the artists group. Sculptures, objects and installations will be placed in the two halves of the room created by the wall. Implenia and the artists group both aim to give young people a platform for their talents, and this has led Implenia to entrust the building of the “practical sculpture” to its apprentice masons. The young apprentices thus have an opportunity to take responsibility for a project and put the skills they have learned to the test. Carlos Freitas, who is doing a masonry apprenticeship to complement the commercial traineeship he has already completed, is enthusiastic: “As an apprentice mason I never dreamed that I would work on an art exhibition!” You can find out more about the Künstlergruppe Winterthur here.
