Implenia celebrates breakthrough at the Bözberg Tunnel

A key project for Swiss railway infrastructure

Dietlikon, 13 December 2017 – Today’s symbolic tunnel breakthrough celebration marks a milestone in the largest single project within the 4-metre corridor on the Gotthard Axis: the new 2.7-kilometre-long Bözberg Tunnel. Along with client SBB, and various cantonal and government representatives, Implenia celebrated the completion of the main drilling work at the tunnel’s northern portal in Effingen. The tunnel boring machine, which has a diameter of 12.36 metres, has been progressing exactly as planned at a rate of around 22 metres a day since last June – an outstanding performance. Next year, Implenia will work on the five cross-links, the whole of the interior fitting and both tunnel portals. The shell construction will then be completed, and the railway technology, including overhead conductor rail and ballastless track, will be installed. Trains will start running through the Bözberg Tunnel from the end of 2020. The old tunnel will be converted into a service and rescue shaft by 2022. You can find out more about the project here.
