Experiencing urban development at first hand

"The Metropolitans" will provide high quality, sought-after living space in the heart of Zurich Nord | With the first of the two towers almost complete, Caspar Bresch of Zurich's Office for Urban Development provides an insight into the history and future of Zurich Nord from a vantage point 60 meters high

Dietlikon, 17 June 2014 – Zurich Nord (Zurich North) has undergone rapid development in recent years. The Metropolitans, two tower blocks right in the middle of the new district in the north of the city, will provide high quality living space for future residents. With the West Tower nearing completion, journalists are being invited to take a trip in an open-air lift to the top of the tower this afternoon. The 360˚-view from the newly constructed vantage point makes clear the enormous changes that have occurred in Zurich Nord and shows off the dynamism of the district: new buildings, tramlines, pedestrian and bike paths, parks – all seen from a new and surprising perspective. The journalists are accompanied throughout the event by Anton Affentranger, CEO of Implenia, and Caspar Bresch of Zurich's Office for Urban Development (Amt für Städtebau). Mr. Bresch gives a talk about the theory and practice of urban development, and describes the process that took Zurich Nord from the drawing board to today's thriving new district. The breathtaking backdrop adds extra interest to the fascinating presentation, after which there is an opportunity to talk to the people behind the development.

The Metropolitans development, which is an Implenia project, significantly increases the amount of housing available in the Zurich Nord district. Each of the two 20-storey buildings will offer owner-occupied apartments with interesting layouts ranging in size from 70 to more than 200 square metres, giving residents a panoramic view of the Alps and of the city, from the Uetliberg right round to the airport. The large enclosed balconies running right round the buildings are a unique feature that provides additional external living space. Residents will also have exclusive access to the "Sky Lounge" that will be built on the roof. The apartments in the West Tower – which will be ready for residents in spring 2015 – have almost all been sold. Apartments in the East Tower are still available. These should be ready for their new owners from spring 2016.
