Construction logistics for the hospital of tomorrow: New building for Kantonsspital St. Gallen

The Kantonsspital St. Gallen (KSSG), the central hospital of eastern Switzerland, is getting a modern new building. The highly complex construction project relies on the construction logistics expertise of BCL Schweiz AG.

The project, for which Implenia is carrying out civil engineering and master builder work, focuses on the renovation and spatial consolidation of the highly frequented outpatient clinics and intervention rooms. The new building comprises the 07A and 07B buildings and the Ostschweizer Kinderspital (OKS). Building 07A and 07B will each be constructed as a three-storey base building with two basement floors and will contain examination and treatment areas, including operating theatres. The wards of Building 07A are housed in a high-rise building above the basement floors. The OKS also consists of a high-rise base building with a bed tower above. Almost 100 modern patient rooms as well as a public roof garden offer a contemporary infrastructure. In addition, the new underground car park with 450 parking spaces enables faster and more convenient access. The hospital thus meets the patients' demands in terms of room size, comfort and mobility. An interactive infographic on the new building can be found here.

The project places high demands on construction logistics, because the construction site is not only located directly in the city centre of St. Gallen, but also in the immediate vicinity of the existing hospital, which will continue to be in operation for the entire construction period. Among other things, rest periods have to be observed here, which requires sensitive handling in the execution of construction logistics. In addition, large delivery quantities from a high number of trades have to be coordinated. BCL is responsible for delivery traffic and construction site logistics control, storage area management and floor logistics on the project. On the one hand, this refers to the transport of building materials directly to the work sites on the respective floors; on the other hand, it also refers to the removal of waste there for disposal at the materials yard.

BCL works started in March 2022 and are expected to be completed in March 2028. The total value of the basic contract is CHF 2.28 million. This is currently the second ongoing hospital project for BCL, as the construction logistics experts are also currently working on the new construction of the Kantonsspital in Aarau.
