MAN M15 Production Hall

Short description

In just eleven months, Implenia completed a turnkey production facility for engine assembly lines for MAN Truck & Bus AG.

The project

In a construction period of just eleven months, the Industrial Construction branch completed a turnkey production hall as the general contractor on behalf of MAN Truck & Bus AG. Hall M15 was built as an extension to Hall M33, featuring a mezzanine level, to expand the existing facility to the east and south. The new building is fully integrated into the client’s production cycle, which meant that immediately upon completion, assembly lines for engines—along with the corresponding logistics and pre-assembly operations—that could not be relocated elsewhere were put into operation there by the client.

Services in detail

The hall is designed as an asymmetrical, two-aisle building with a reinforced concrete intermediate platform at a height of 6 meters. Small-gauge crane systems were installed beneath this intermediate platform.

The structural framework in the main aisle is designed to support a 20-metric-ton overhead crane. Building M15 is constructed in the main aisle using reinforced concrete columns (main structural framework) and underslung steel trusses (roof structure). In the side aisle, reinforced concrete joists were used for the gallery ceiling to support the loads of the reinforced concrete slab. The reinforced concrete slab is constructed with filigree ceiling elements and a corresponding concrete overlay.

On the gallery level, the ventilation system required for the new building was installed, and preparations were made for a future expansion to include foreman’s offices, meeting rooms, and a visitor center. The common areas are located over two stories in the northern part of the hall.

Challenges

Despite the presence of a utility trench on the construction site and an existing stormwater retention basin for Hall M33, construction got off to a smooth start.
