Implenia wins contract for lot H41 of Brenner Base Tunnel
Glattpark (Opfikon), 18. November 2021 – Implenia and joint venture partner Webuild Group (Webuild and csc costruzioni) have been selected by Galleria di Base del Brennero - Brenner Basistunnel BBT SE (BBT) to build lot H41 of the Austrian side of the Brenner Base Tunnel. Each partner has a 50% stake in the joint venture. The contract for lot H41 Sillschlucht-Pfons is worth a total of around CHF 690 million (EUR 651 million). The contract has already come into legal effect. Implenia Austria is in charge of the technical lead of the project. Directly and indirectly, the project will create around 400 new jobs in the region.
Lot H41 Sillschlucht-Pfons consists the construction of the main tunnels in direction north to Innsbruck and direction south to Pfons, starting from the access-tunnel Ahrental. About 5.7 km are excavated with drill and blast method and 16.4 km as TBM-drive. Additionally, the inner lining has to be built for the main tunnels as well as for the Innsbruck emergency stop and the exploratory tunnel. The work commissioned by BBT is scheduled to last approximately 80 months.
Environmental aspects and sustainability play an important role in the planning and construction of the lot. Criteria within the bidder process included measures to reduce the environmental impact and the use of green electricity. Transports are subject to strict regulations and are only carried out by vehicles with the latest exhaust emission norms. The high environmental standards of both joint venture partners contributed to the positive assessment of their bid.
Implenia, together with Webuild Group, is already working on the southern connection to the Brenner Base Tunnel with the high-capacity line between Franzensfeste and Waidbruck. Erwin Scherer, Global Head Tunnelling at Implenia, is pleased to have won the new lot: “The Brenner Base Tunnel is an important part of the Scandinavia-Mediterranean corridor within the Trans-European Network (TEN-T), which is improving railway connections throughout the whole continent. We’re very happy that we can bring our many years of experience and our proven expertise in tunnel construction to this large and complex tunnelling project.”
