Implenia awarded EUR 380 million contract for the new Albvorlandtunnel near Stuttgart
Dietlikon, 21 December 2015 – As part of the Stuttgart-Ulm rail project, the Stuttgart railway junction is being reconfigured. In addition, the new Wendlingen-Ulm line, about 60 kilometres long, should provide a faster and more convenient route over the hills of the Swabian Alb. As part of the project, Deutsche Bahn has now chosen Implenia to build the Albvorlandtunnel segment of the route (section 2). In line with the “One Company” strategy, the project, worth around EUR 380 million, involves specialists from Implenia’s tunnelling, foundation engineering and civil engineering departments.
Over half of the route runs through tunnels. The largest underground segment is the Albvorlandtunnel, which comprises two shafts, each around eight kilometres long and around eleven metres in diameter. The section also includes a link to the Stuttgart-Tübingen rail line (“Kleine Wendlinger Kurve”) and a freight train connection. Both of these start at the west portal of the Albvorlandtunnel. The freight link, consisting of two single-track tunnels around 170 metres in length, provides a connection to the existing Neckar Valley Railway. Preparatory work begins in early January 2016, and the main construction work is scheduled to start in summer 2016.
Implenia won the order thanks to a coordinated effort across the Group, underlining the company's impressive ability to acquire major infrastructure projects in Europe. Implenia is currently also working in Austria, for example, on sections 1.1 and 2.1 of the new Semmering Base Tunnel as well as on the Granitztal Tunnels. In Scandinavia, the Group won a major contract in the summer for Stockholm's new “Förbifart” city bypass.
