Implenia is contributing to build the longest electricity subsea cable in the world for approximately CHF 23 million

Tunnelling and civil engineering work on the new interconnector between the UK and Norway

Dietlikon, 29 June 2015 – The world's longest subsea electricity interconnector, the NSN Link between the UK and Norway, will be completed by 2021. The 720 km-long subsea cable will run between Blyth in England and Kvilldal in Norway. It will link the two countries' electricity markets and will have a capacity of 1,400 megawatts – equivalent to the power needed to light 750,000 homes. The project will allow the UK to increase its share of renewable energy and balance out the fluctuations of its own wind power production. Norway will benefit from reasonable power when there is a surplus in the UK and increased security of power supply in cold and dry periods. In this context, the Norwegian network operator Statnett commissioned Implenia to carry out infrastructure works at Kvilldal. The contract, worth around CHF 23 million (nearly NOK 200 million) includes various complex civil engineering and tunnelling jobs that will allow Implenia to utilise its proven capabilities in infrastructure construction. These will include excavation, blasting and tunnelling (2.4 kilometres), slotted hole drilling, construction of tracks, ditches and converter stations, as well as water, fire, drainage and sewerage systems. Work is scheduled to start in August 2015 and this part of the total project work should be completed by summer 2017.
