Work on the new Semmering Base Tunnel resuming on 1 July 2014

Time used to optimise on-site preparations for the construction work

Dietlikon 1 July 2014 – At the beginning of 2014, the consortium consisting of Implenia and the Austrian company Swjetelsky secured the order worth around EUR 623 million (about CHF 770 million; Implenia's share: CHF 385 million) for a contract section of the new 27.3-kilometre Semmering Base Tunnel (SBTn). The SBTn, which will connect Lower Austria with Steiermark from 2024, is currently one of the most important large-scale infrastructure projects in Central Europe and part of Austria's new southern rail route. Early in 2014, Austria’s Administrative Court allowed objections relating to the approval process, delaying the start of the project by an estimated six months. The consortium has now been notified by the project contractor that operations can resume on 1 July 2014. The consortium made good use of the delay, tackling essential work on site and making optimum preparations for the construction operations.
