Three innovation and sustainability awards at once for Implenia in Germany

“German Sustainability Award” and “German Raw Material Efficiency Award” for a new carbon concrete composite | “STUVA Prize” for innovations in underground construction for Wehrhahn Line in Düsseldorf

Dietlikon, 14 December 2015– Implenia recently received three prestigious awards at once in Germany. They represent the company's commitment to sustainability and innovation. Germany's biggest construction research project “C³ - Carbon Concrete Composite” recently won the German Sustainability Award 2015 in the category of research. Initiated by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the award singles out a method of construction that conserves resources with a goal of reducing material by 50% and replacing about 20% of reinforced concrete with carbon concrete over the next decade. The ambitious C3 Project won out over 86 other submissions to the competition. Carbon concrete, a composite of carbon fibres and high-performance concrete, opens up new possibilities for sustainable, flexible and longer-lasting construction as well as a new formal language in architecture and urban planning. More than 130 partners from research, business and associations are involved in the major project. Implenia is among them with its units Materials Engineering and Maintenance. Implenia is focusing on improving the new composite, developing basic design principles and identifying potential applications. The C³ Project was also honoured with the German Raw Material Efficiency Award 2015 of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. This award is given to outstanding examples of the intelligent use of materials.

The STUVA Conference is the major international gathering for tunnel builders staged by STUVA (Research Association for Underground Transportation Facilities). This year it honoured the “Wehrhahn Line Düsseldorf” construction project with the STUVA Award 2015 for outstanding achievements and innovations in underground construction. The new 3.4 kilometre long underground rail line expands local public transport in this city on the Rhine River. STUVA gave the following reasons for singling out this project: "The excellent project stands not only for numerous technical innovations – from structural engineering to safety and monitoring technology – but also for highly complex construction work on the intra-urban underground rail line and the city's light rail system that was completed without major incidents despite extremely difficult conditions. Implenia played an instrumental part in the successful execution of the project as general contractor for the expanded structural work on contract section 1.
