Major new CHF 93 million contract won in Vernier (Canton Geneva)
Dietlikon, 21 October 2014 – The excavation work that began this week marks the start of a major project in the Geneva municipality of Vernier: Implenia is building a new depot and maintenance centre for trams and busses on behalf of Transports publics genevois (tpg). From 2019 this depot on the “En Chardon” site will provide garaging for 70 trams and 130 buses on two underground levels. The contract is worth around CHF 93 million. The new “Centre de Maintenance Secondaire” (CMS) will provide the space required for tpg’s fleet of public transport vehicles, which has steadily expanded in the Greater Geneva region over the last 15 years. The site is close to Geneva Airport where buildings have to comply with strict height restrictions and construction work has to meet specific conditions. Implenia is using approximately 13,000 tonnes of steel and 100,000 cubic meters of concrete to build the CMS. The first job, however, will be to excavate a total of 450,000 cubic meters of earth by spring 2016. In the interests of sustainability and reducing transport emissions, a 1.7 kilometre-long conveyor belt is being installed to take the excavated material away to a regional disposal site. This is a complex project, especially with regard to the foundation engineering and civil engineering required, so the extensive expertise provide by Implenia's specialists from the Buildings, the Construction French-speaking Switzerland and the Tunnelling & Civil Engineering Business Units will be invaluable. Pascal Ganty, Director of Infrastructure & Buildings at client tpg emphasises: “We chose Implenia to execute the work because it combines a strong local presence with the wide-ranging expertise required for such a challenging project.”“
