Implenia wins new major order at Semmering Base Tunnel
Dietlikon, 9 June 2015 – At the Semmering Base Tunnel (SBT) ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG has awarded Implenia the contract for section SBT1.1 ("Tunnel Gloggnitz"), worth EUR 457 million (approximately CHF 480 million). In January 2014, Switzerland's leading construction and construction services company already won the contract for section SBT2.1 ("Tunnel Fröschnitzgraben"), worth around CHF 770 million in total (consortium share 50%). Within the section SBT1.1 consortium, which also includes Hochtief and Thyssen Schachtbau, Implenia has a share of 40%, or around CHF 192 million, and is the technical lead.
The most eastward of the three SBT construction lots (see picture) involves the creation of two single-track rail tunnels, each approximately seven and a half kilometres long. These are being bored from the Gloggnitz portal and the Göstritz access point, and they will be linked by 16 connecting galleries, an equipment gallery and two logistics shafts. The Göstritz access point comprises an access tunnel and two 450 metre shafts. This is complex work: in addition to tunnelling, shaft construction, building construction and roadworks, the project includes slope stabilisation, excavation, concreting, asphalting, concrete ceilings, drainage and cabling work, as well as landscaping and maintenance. Work on the lot starts in summer 2015 and will last until 2024.
The SBT is currently one of the most important large-scale infrastructure projects in Central Europe. It forms part of Austria's new southern railway, which serves as the central axis for the trans-European route between the Baltic Sea and the Adriatic (Baltic-Adriatic Corridor). With a total length of 27.3 kilometres, the SBT links the country's Lower Austria and Steiermark regions. More information about the project can be found here.
For Implenia, the contract marks a major milestone in the development of its infrastructure business in Europe. Implenia's experience and expertise gained during the successful construction of the NEAT base tunnel will be very useful in this new project.
