Construction work begins on the “Am Glattbogen” housing project

Ground-breaking ceremony for replacement buildings | Sustainable, affordable homes in Schwamendingen

Dietlikon, 25 October 2016 – On Tuesday, Implenia and the client, ASIG housing cooperative, held a ground-breaking ceremony for the project to replace the “Am Glattbogen” housing development. They were joined by representatives of pool architects, the City of Zurich and other guests. This symbolic act marked the start of construction work on a new sustainable and affordable residential development in the Zurich district of Schwamendingen. During the celebrations, Walter Oertle, President of the ASIG housing cooperative, expressed his satisfaction: “The project makes a valuable contribution to high quality densification in the district. We’re pleased to have found a partner like Implenia that takes account of ASIG’s long-term commitment.” Implenia is building 229 homes on the eastern part of the Glattbogen site. These will replace the existing 115 residential units, which no longer meet modern social and urban planning standards. The new four- and seven-storey buildings are being built to the Minergie standard and meet the criteria for high-density construction. As well as rental apartments, the new build will include a kindergarten, a community hall and around 400m2 of commercial space. One of the major issues that Implenia faces in this project is the high water table – a result of the site’s proximity to the River Glatt. The construction team is tackling this complex problem with a “wellpoint” procedure, in which a vacuum system is used to lower the groundwater temporarily around the excavated area. This ensures that all the subterranean elements of the build can be put in place properly.

The “Am Glattbogen” project is part of ASIG’s comprehensive renewal strategy for the Dreispitz neighbourhood. Thanks to the excellent collaboration with the client, planners, subcontractors and authorities, demolition of the old buildings will soon be completed. Excavations can then begin, meaning that masonry and concreting work can start in January 2017. The first tenants should be able to move into their new homes in summer 2018.
