Renovation of the «Ernst-Abbe-Sportfeld» stadium
Short description
Jena has a football arena suitable for the DFL. Implenia realized the stadium conversion during ongoing operations as part of a consortium.
The project
In a joint venture with Züblin, Implenia built the excavation pit and carried out the structural work and roof work, including the steel roof structure, as part of a partnership agreement. The client, the EAS Stadionbau consortium, was commissioned by the city of Jena to convert the almost 100-year-old Ernst Abbe sports field into a soccer arena suitable for use by the German Football League (DFL). The possibility of multiple uses for the new arena was at the heart of the concept.
Services in detail
The centerpiece is the modern functional building with a new east stand, ten boxes and event space for around 800 guests. The old north and south stands were demolished and replaced by new, roofed reinforced concrete structures. Functional installations such as kiosks, fan stores and sanitary facilities were built underneath the stands. The original west stand as the main stand was renovated and given new functional areas. All grandstand areas are now covered.
The foundations consist mainly of in-situ concrete foundations on approx. 8 m long bored piles. The construction of the stands is made of prefabricated elements. The new functional building of the east stand is a mix of in-situ concrete components and steel composite structures.
Challenges
The entire renovation was carried out while the stadium was in operation and while maintaining the necessary functional and safety aspects.
