Lateral Towers sports hall

Short description

Implenia is building a two-storey sports hall and multi-purpose building to passive house standards in Frankfurt-Bockenheim.

The project

Implenia Hochbau is building a turnkey two-storey sports hall with grandstand and two by three pitches for Cells Property Investors, which is suitable for a variety of sports. An old parking garage will be demolished to create the construction site. The new building comprises the hall and two multi-purpose buildings; the contract also includes equipping the sports halls. Implenia has already provided advice and optimized the planning in a pre-construction phase.

Services in detail

The new building is being constructed next to the old "Lateral Towers" administration building, which the city of Frankfurt is converting into two six-form grammar schools. The schools and clubs will use the sports halls; the lower hall will be suitable for competitions. The facility is barrier-free and all entrances are threshold-free. There is a central staircase in the foyer and an elevator for the disabled. There are two further staircases in the complex.

Challenges

Around 33 m long prestressed concrete composite beams have to be installed from an adjacent underground parking garage using a 650-ton truck-mounted crane. Ceiling/formwork heights of more than ten meters, boundary buildings and high groundwater levels.

Sustainability

The sports facility is being built to the passive house standard. Heat will be supplied via an air/water heat pump cascade solution and ventilation via air handling units. The hall will be equipped with a photovoltaic system on the green roof.
