Sanierung Verlagshaus am Alexanderplatz, Berlin

Short description

At Berlin's Alexanderplatz, the listed building of Berliner Verlag is being renovated and supplemented by a striking new building. The renowned firm GMP Architekten is responsible for the conversion.

The project

The building complex, called "The New Podium", will in future provide space for offices and administrative offices of various companies as well as retail space on the first floor. The special feature of the new building is the double-sloped roof surface, which is made even more striking by the diagonals converging on the angular corner and the very slender, pointed gables and sets a drastic, visual accent to the existing high-rise building from the 1970s. The current owner of the property in the immediate vicinity of Alexanderplatz is the investor Tishman Speyer, which is coordinating the redevelopment work. The building's new tenants have already been confirmed: the online furniture retailer Wayfare will occupy eight floors, and a media company will also move back into the building: Seven floors will be used in the future by the South African media group Naspers. The Berlin-based publishing house had run into financial difficulties in recent years. The owners of the long-established media company have changed several times.
