Hôtel des patients, Lausanne
Short description
The desire to provide medical services while offering a hotel-like welcome has prompted the CHUV to adapt its services to inpatients. To welcome them, the Hôtel des Patients (patients' hotel) was opened in October 2016.
The project
The facility, designed as part of a public-private partnership, is located in the immediate vicinity of the hospital and accommodates independent patients who require care that can be provided on site. It also offers the possibility of accommodating relatives of hospital patients. The facility is also open to the public.
Services in detail
The Hôtel des Patients offers one hundred and fourteen rooms spread over two buildings of different heights. The lower one is located on the Avenue de La Sallaz, while the second, set back from the nuisance of car traffic, is placed at the top of the property. Between the two buildings is a courtyard connecting the first floor of one to the first floor of the other. The lower building contains the treatment center, which the patient will visit independently, the reception, the restaurant with its canteen kitchen and a few rooms. The higher building houses most of the rooms and the CHUV endocrinology department on one and a half floors. The underground parking garage offers thirty-six parking spaces.

Challenges
The six months of construction - from the end of April 2015 to November 2016 - presented a double challenge: firstly, the extremely tight deadline, and secondly, the demands of a highly complex logistics operation due to the dimensions of the totally excavated site and the urban context.
