Short description
Boehringer Ingelheim, the largest research-based pharmaceutical company in Germany, has relied on Implenia as its construction partner for many years and has implemented a large number of construction projects with Implenia at the Ingelheim site.
The project
The collaboration began in 2013 with the turnkey construction of the New Office Building. Subsequently, several shell constructions were commissioned for an administration building, a production building, a technical center, and a power plant. With this expansion, Boehringer Ingelheim is strengthening Germany's role as a research and production location for supplying medicines to patients around the world.
Services in detail
The New Office Building, with a gross floor area of around 23,000 m², impresses with its transparency. The administrative headquarters, whose striking glass atrium connects four six-story building sections, is the organizational heart of the company, which conducts research, development, and production at its Ingelheim site, covering 762,000 m² and employing more than 10,000 people.
The VGN office building consists of two asymmetrical U-shaped structures with an access core between them. This enables short traffic routes and optimal lighting of the office areas. Implenia constructed the rainproof outer shell.
For the new biomass cogeneration plant, Implenia constructed the shell with fuel storage hall, biomass boiler, steam center, machine room, water house, switchgear and social building, electrical area, and the central supply and disposal facilities in the northeastern part of the plant site.
For the NHP (New Hydrogenation Plant), Implenia constructed another shell for a new chemical plant. This is a building with a basement, a ground floor, and four upper floors, as well as a grating level for the installation of ventilation equipment. With the exception of the stairwell cores, the fourth floor is constructed of steel. The ceiling above the ground floor consists in part of a steel platform, and a multi-story platform structure and several small steel operating platforms complete the working levels.
With the new SOL (Solids Launch Factory) building, Boehringer now has a highly automated smart factory as the latest addition to its production network in Ingelheim: All machines and systems are fully connected via digital networks and almost all processes are self-controlled. Implenia constructed the rainproof shell as a reinforced concrete structure with large spans and corresponding floor heights so that fire protection installations and partitions could be added at a later stage. The load-bearing system consists of solid floor and ceiling slabs, columns, beams, and stiffening stairwell cores.
With the shell of the CIP – Chemical Innovation Plant, Boehringer is laying the foundation for future development capacities for manufacturing processes for new chemical agents. The building, which has a basement, a ground floor, and five upper floors, will house four classic chemical wings. The building is a solid construction with flat ceilings. The core, the columns, the shafts, and the closed parts of the facades support the floor slabs and form the bracing of the building. All facades are load-bearing. The basement was waterproofed against water pressure.
Implenia also constructed a turnkey warehouse with high-bay storage for consumer goods at the Ingelheim plant, implemented a total of three construction measures for the east plant expansion, and constructed the shell of the LIL (Liquid Launch) building with many prefabricated parts, with large spans and dimensions, and constructed the shell and rainproof envelope of the SEED production building, including all facades and the steel structure with large prefabricated girders. For the plant expansion, the foundations for the supply pipe bridges, which connect the CIP with the new buildings over several hundred meters, were also constructed.
