Tunnel work begins on the U3 in Nuremberg
Dietlikon, 4 May 2015 – Construction has been under way on the new section of the U3 underground railway line in Nuremberg since August 2014. A further milestone was reached recently. On 25 March 2015, city representatives, tunnelling experts from Implenia and numerous residents gathered to celebrate the commencement of tunnelling for the future train station. This marks the start of work on the underground railway tunnel between the future Grossreuth station and the existing Gustav Adolf Strasse station. After the traditional blessing, tunnel patroness Ulrike Gsell switched on the 120 metric tonne, 500 kW part-face heading machine in a symbolic act. From now till November 2016, it and another machine will drive the two single-track circular tunnels about 650 meters long in the direction of the existing station to the east and the double-track circular tunnel about 240 meters long toward the west. Together, the two machines will excavate about 65,000 cubic meters of material and advance 1.5 kilometres underground beneath Nuremberg. Large-scale noise protection covers are used, so the entire task will proceed relatively quietly and be barely noticed by people in the area. At the same time, structural work continues on the new train station. The construction work on both U3 sections and on the station is expected to be completed in mid-2018.
