The IMP – lift-off for a home-grown innovation

GOLDBOX FOR MENTORING PROGRAMME
The Implenia Mentoring Programme brings experienced managers together with new talent to nurture the next generation’s leadership, social and technical skills. The project was launched through the “KICKBOX” internal innovation platform.
The initial impetus came when a clear need was identified within the company: Internal analysis and surveys showed that young employees are under-represented, knowledge transfer often remains informal at best, and talent development pathways are conspicuous by their absence. Meanwhile, there is a real desire to reinforce a common culture of leadership and knowledge across Implenia’s Divisions.
Against this background, a team developed a mentoring programme called “The IMP”, which they submitted to the internal innovation platform KICKBOX. The new approach systematically pairs mentors with mentees, tailoring the pairings to the people’s backgrounds and development goals. Mentor and mentee then talk to each other regularly over a period of around a year about individual priorities – from leadership and methodologies to personal development.
Divisions Buildings and Civil Engineering ran pilot programmes involving around 70 mentor-mentee pairings. Participants were very enthusiastic about the mentoring, and the test phase showed that “The IMP” could be integrated efficiently into everyday working life. The average time spent on the programme was around 1.5 hours per month. Participants felt that particular value was added by the support for personal development, the targeted nurturing of talent, and the improved knowledge sharing.
Based on the pilot, the Implenia Executive Committee signed off the mentoring programme for Group-wide use in July 2025. It will now be introduced as a global, one-year programme for around 60 mentees at a time.
The KICKBOX programme is an internal online platform that enables Implenia employees to pursue their own ideas during working hours and develop them step-by-step until they are ready for implementation. More than 180 project ideas have been submitted since the programme was launched in 2019. The mentoring project shows once again how an internal initiative developed by individual employees can add value across the whole Group.
