Wehrhahn-Linie, Los 1

Short description

Demanding transport infrastructure project in inner-city location in Düsseldorf implemented on schedule

The project

The new 3.4-kilometer-long light rail line with a total of six stations and two surface stops runs underground from the S-Bahn station «Bilk» to the «Wehrhahn» station and essentially follows the streets Elisabethstrasse / Kasernenstrasse and Schadowstrasse / Am Wehrhahn.

Lot 1 comprises the construction of the tunnel construction using shield tunnelling, the construction of five stations using the cover construction method as well as the construction of the ramp structures and the two above-ground stops.

Services in detail

  • The construction of the tunnel structure in loose rock is largely carried out by hydro-shield tunnelling with reinforced concrete tubbing.
  • The station excavation pits are constructed as diaphragm walls and are anchored back several times. Extensive building security measures with HDI (jet injection) and compensation injection are required.
  • The construction of the station buildings (extended shell) is carried out using the cover construction method.

Challenges

  • For reasons of urban compatibility, the stations and individual sections of line are constructed using shield tunnelling / cover construction and open construction methods under the protection of excavation pit covers. This results in extensive accompanying work on the road, pipeline and canal stock, which must be carried out logistically and temporally interlocked with the civil engineering services.
  • These services, as well as the construction of the excavation pit enclosure and the cover, must be carried out in numerous construction and traffic phases. Minimising the environmental impact of the inner-city conurbation is the top priority.
