SMS 2A - New double track railway Sandbukta-Moss-Såstad
The new double track railway Sandbukta-Moss-Såstad (SMS) is part of the Intercity development and is one of the sections of the line towards Halden (the Østfold railway's western line).
The double track of SMS is running partly in tunnels and a concrete culvert and partly in open stretches. It includes a new railway station, approx. 200 m south of the current station, with four tracks and a connecting track towards Moss harbor. SMS is 10.3 km long and covers three open stretches and two tunnels. The work comprises:
A 630 m substructure for double track railways in open stretch at Sandbukta
The Mossetunnel with a length of 2,720 m from Sandbukta to Moss center including a 420 m long cut and cover section
The new Moss Station with a length of 800 m
The Carlbergtunnel with a length of 2,350 m from Kleberget to Calberg including a 200 m long cut and cover section
A 3,850 m substructure for double track railway in open stretch towards the connection of the existing double track at Såstad in Rygge.
The contract of SMS 2a, was awarded on June 28, 2019 with a value of 6.340 billion NOK. Construction started in October 2019 and will be completed in May 2025.

In both tunnels are smaller fault zones. Due to challenging ground conditions Mossetunnel requires a structural strengthening when passing a fault zone consisting of a deep gully with minimal rock coverage.
Mossetunnel is extended with a 420 m long cut and cover section through areas with soft and quick clay. The new station building is constructed perpendicular to the culvert. A new collective hub is established outside the new Mossetunnel, requiring rerouting of existing roads (removed / restored at the end of the project).
The areas of SMS 2A are characterized by difficult ground conditions with quick clay as well as large depths to the rock, both in the city center, in the station area and in the open stretch of Carlberg.
