New biology research building at the University of Mainz

Short description

Implenia has completed the first construction phase of the new biology research centre on the campus of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU Mainz), including handover ready for operation, and has begun the second phase.

The project

The Frankfurt branch of Implenia Buildings entered into a joint venture with Wolfferts Gebäudetechnik to execute the first construction phase of the new biology research centre on the campus of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU Mainz), including handover ready for operation. Including planning and maintenance, the project has a contract value of some 29 million euros.

Services in detail

For the very first time, JGU Mainz awarded the contract for the new construction directly on the basis of a functional description of services. Implenia provided all the necessary planning services, including building permit planning; all additional technical planning, calculations and expert reports up until the execution phase; all works and installation planning; and the audit planning across all the required trade sections.

The new construction is primarily intended to be a research centre, not a teaching building. In addition to the laboratories, it also includes an area for keeping animals, offices, a small lecture theatre and student workstations. Eleven professors from the department work in the building, which is designed for a total of 195 staff.

The research is oriented towards protein biochemistry, molecular and cell biology, and animal studies. The building is divided up into a ground floor, three upper floors and a lower ground floor. The ground floor and upper floors contain the laboratories and offices, as well as the lecture theatre. Most of the lower ground floor is taken up by a space for keeping insects, fish, frogs and reptiles. It also includes a technical control room, with two more situated on the roof.
